First, I'm a fan of the Iron Druid Series by Kevin Hearne, I've never read any of the works in the other two series by Delilah S. Dawson and Chuck Wendig. I think that probably makes a huge difference in how they came across to me. Some stories just aren't good to jump into when you're doing it blind."A Prelude to War" (Iron Druid Universe) by Hearne - Loved it. It looks back some into the past and some into the future of the coming war. I loved the character development on Granuaile's part and the step forward in Atticus' attempt to head off disaster. I just hope that people don't miss out on this story and start the next book without reading it, because I think it's too important to be missed in the story arc."Not my Circus, Not My Monkeys" (Blud Universe) by Delilah S. Dawson - It was okay, but I have to say I felt a bit lost in this universe and it wasn't quite working for me. So many animals/men are of the Blud (or vampire) types that it's a wonder that anyone with human blood has survived. (Bludmen, Blud horses, Blud rabbits... the mention of Blud Bunnies gave me a weird flashback to Monty Python "Holy Grail" and the attack rabbits. It was a weird moment and didn't do the story any favors.) I'm not sure why the main character, Criminy Stain, seemed to be taking orders and living in a world of humans when he's clearly more powerful than they are. How can Bludmen be very rare if there are Blud animals all over the landscape? How rare is the Magic he can do? Maybe if I'd have read some of the series it would make more sense. But Stain wasn't someone I cared about much, so I don't think I'll get to ever reading that series. He was interesting, but not a lot there to draw me in."Interlude: Swallow" (Miriam Black Universe) by Chuck Wendig - I spent a lot of time lost in this one when it started. I'm pretty sure that fans of the series will be interested in it, but coming in blind it took some work to figure out what exactly was going on as it unfolded. The flow back and forth through time didn't help me much, but I think I got it all by the end. But Miriam is just too dark and too foul mouthed for me. In some characters, constant bad language in their speech and their thoughts may denote strength, and a bit of tempting fate to call them on their rudeness. If done at other times it can be funny and help throw in some lighter moments when things are dark. But it quickly became too much for me, as it made Miriam seem more angry, rude, and broken than strong. I felt sorry for her, and what ever she lived through to get to this point, but I didn't like her or care to read more about her.So the three stars are for the Iron Druid, which I enjoyed. And Thanks, but no thanks, on the other two universes for me. Not from these samples.

Let me start out by saying that the only reason I got this e-book was because I got the next Iron Druid Chronicles for review (Staked) and that book is prefaced by Hearne telling you to go back and make sure you read the story A Prelude to War in Three Slices. Honestly this makes me a bit grumpy because if a novella is that important to the overall series then it should actually be in the next book...either as a prelude or included as an optional story to read in the back of the book. Telling your reader they have to go and dig up some remote novella available only on ebook sucks. So why did I go and pick up Three Slices? Well I really like Delilah Dawson and this included a story about how Criminy Stain gets his circus. Also I have been wanting to read something by Chuck Wendig for for quite some time so this was a good opportunity to get a sample of his writing. So in the end it all worked out well, but I am still a bit grumpy about being coerced into reading this.As with any anthology this was a mixed bag; overall though the stories are pretty good. I am going to write mini-reviews for them all below. If you are a Iron Druid Chronicles fan you definitely want to pick this up for the story that is in here. If you are a Criminy Stain fan (or even if you aren’t) Dawson has a very well done and entertaining story in here about how Criminy Stain got his circus. I can’t really say much about how the Wendig story relate to the Miriam Black series because I haven’t read the rest of that series. All of the stories have to do with tyromancy, which is divination by cheese. Yep, a bit odd...but that is why this collection is cleverly titled Three Slices.- A Prelude to War by Kevin Hearne (3/5 stars)Atticus is traveling to Africa to meet with a diviner there to find out how to take out a group of old vampires and finish the war he seems to be in with them. Meanwhile Granuaile is trying to figure out how to get Loki’s mark removed from her arm. The two stories alternate and are a bit choppy. This is not a novella that makes any sense unless you have read the previous books in the series and is honestly more of a necessarily evil to find out where things are going than really entertaining.- Not My Circus, Not My Monkeys by Delilah S. Dawson (5/5 stars)Criminy Stain finds himself on the run after accidentally killing one of his volunteers. Then he runs into the deadly and enchanting Marissa in the forest; she leads him to a new circus which Criminy is determined to make his own. This was a wonderfully entertaining novella that stands well on it’s own. It also gives some great background on how Criminy Stain gets to where he is in the first Blud novel. I love this world and the characters and Dawson’s writing style is incredibly easy to read.- Interlude: Swallow by Chuck Wendig (4/5 stars)This is my first time reading Wendig’s writing and any of the Miriam Black stories. His writing style is very raw and gritty, it reminds me of Richard Kadrey or Lucy Snyder’s writing style. It’s very adult with a lot of swearing and crude sexual references. I actually enjoyed it and am interested in reading more about Miriam Black. The story didn’t stand alone very well. Miriam is trying to find out how to get rid of this curse she has (which we never get backstory on) and ends up dealing with this serial killer (again a bit vague on what was going on there). Still it was an entertaining and quick read and made me want to pick up the first Miriam Black novel to see what it’s all about.

Love everything about it!

I so loved the first book in this series, “Romantic Country”, I didn't think it would be possible for artist Eriy to come close to the success of it with her sequel book. I was wrong. If anything, I think that “Romantic Country – The Second Tale” is even better. It is a beautiful set of designs. It's hard to imagine but the artist draws her beautiful artwork using ink and a toothpick! Because of this technique, the lines of the drawings have a varying thickness and the print is lighter in tone than in other coloring books. Of the 65 designs in the book, 20 are two-page spreads. The designs take us back to the beautiful land of Cocot. There is a map at the front of the book which shows all of the landmarks. There are thumbnails at the end of the book which explain each of the designs and what and where they are in Cocot. There is a fold-out poster at the end of the book as well. The book is divided into five chapters: The Glow of Beautiful Old Castles, Magnificent Lakeside and Mountain Landscapes, Fairies and Works of Nature, The Witch and the Hidden Secret Forest, and Cheerful Town Scenes. Each of the chapter heading pages includes a lovely two-page spread designs. Additionally, the designs within each chapter relate back to the title of the chapter. There are a couple of designs at the front of the book which sit outside of the chapters. These designs are not included in the thumbnails at the back of the book. The book has a brown kraft paper style attached cover. This cover has line drawings on front and back covers which you can color if you wish. The detached dustcover is beautifully illustrated with colorful designs of Cocot. The inside of the dustcover is white. This is what I found when I was coloring in this book and testing the paper with my coloring medium.65 Beautiful designs set in the fantasy land of Cocot. There are 20 two-page designs spreads.Designs are printed on both sides of the pagePaper is cream colored, heavyweight, smooth and non-perforated.Sewn BindingDesigns merge into the binding area and two-page spreads cross over the binding as well. The book opens fairly flat for coloring but a little effort is needed to color into the binding edgeAlcohol-based markers bleed through this paper. I don't suggest this medium as it will ruin the design on the back of the page. If you decide to use this style of markers, I suggest a blotter page of card stock or a couple of pages of heavyweight paper under your working page to keep ink from seeping further in to the book.Water-based markers and India ink pens left slight shadows on the back of the page. I could see them and it bothered me enough not to want to use these for coloring my designs.Gel pens did not bleed through but required additional drying time.Colored pencils worked fairly well with this paper. I tested both oil and wax based pencils and had a little trouble blending with both. Due to the smooth texture of the paper, when I used a blending stick, there was a slight amount of smear versus blend. Otherwise, colored pencils worked well. Pigment went on deep and thick and I was able to easily layer multiple colors.

Today is Tuesday, and Christmas is Sunday. I have to finish my Christmas shopping after work today. Then I need to spend the next three evenings wrapping. BUT I DON'T WANT TO! I received this delightful second installment of Romantic Country today, and all I want to do is go home and color!I absolutely loved the first book of this series by Eriy. It may very well be my favorite coloring book, and I own well over 100. I think I love this book even more. The artwork is more enchanting than the first book. I especially love the sections with fairies and witches. Once again we have maps of Cocot, an index at the back of the book explaining each scene, and a cute pull-out interactive poster. The dust cover is lovely and can be removed.I'm envious of Eriy. I can't even draw a straight line, but this talented artist can create beautiful artwork with just a toothpick! It's truly amazing. If I had to choose one word to describe her work, it would be "charming". I'm totally delighted and am eagerly looking forward to book 3, which is available for pre-order.

I adore all of the Romantic Country coloring books by Eriy and just love her artwork. It is so much fun bringing life to these wonderful pages. I was over joyed with this purchase and strongly recommend the First Tale as well. I've already got the Third Tale pre-ordered and can't wait for its release in May! Fabulous Book!!!

I am an avid colorist and I love coloring a variety of things but something keeps drawing me back to these Romantic Country books. I have the First Tale and love it. I am so glad that we finally got the Second Tale. Hopefully the Third Tale will be available in the US soon as well. The pictures are all very well drawn. The paper is double sided but thicker than most coloring page papers that are being used today. I still wouldn't trust markers to not bleed through but gel pens and pencils and some water based pens will do fantastically on this paper. I love everything about this book and highly recommend it.

Love this coloring book. Great quality paper. I use my Derwent inktense pencil, and using water on this page amazing. It did not mess up the page on the other side. S must buy

wonderful book....in fact all of Erly books are great. Can you believe that she drew these pictures with some ink and TOOTHPICKS. Beautifully illustrated and a joy to color in. You will find fulfillment as you color and especially when you finish a picture. Enjoy this book and all others from Erly. Look for the goose throughout each and every page in the book. Have fun.

This is the best adult coloring book imaginable...except that the pages do not detach! If you've got some pages to frame, you can't remove them. Many of the drawings spread across 2 pages, so when you can't detach the pages it is almost impossible to color. Can't understand why the publisher can't fix this since the book's would be near-perfect, otherwise. Magical illustrations.

Yes ! The book is wonderful!! The pages are nice and thick. I've used Glitter gel pens and Prismacolor pencils and they work well on this book. No leaking through from my gel pens. The paper absorbs the ink nicely without ruining the other side of the page. I was worried about that happening , but I'm very impressed. Prismacolors write smoothly on the paper and blend well also. The images are adorable. This is one of my favorite coloring books

Review

Praise for Leading with a Limp“There are good books on leadership, but this one is profound. It is better than a ‘how to do it’ book; this is a ‘how to be it’ book for leaders. Dan Allender offers serious wisdom rather than simple platitudes.”–Mark Sanborn, speaker, leadership consultant, and best-selling author of The Fred Factor “Not only is Dan Allender a good friend, he is a great leader. In Leading with a Limp, he has shown us how we can effectively lead those allotted to our charge. Read this book...it will bring a lot of things into perspective for you.”–Dennis Rainey, president of FamilyLife and coauthor of Moments Together for Couples“After reading this book, the first two words out of my mouth were ‘At last!’ Amid a deluge of spiritual gifts inventories, at last there is someone who understands how God’s strength is made perfect in our imperfections. At last someone has brought spiritual strengths and spiritual weaknesses into conversation. For Dan Allender, the limp is a limpid way of walking that leads into the very presence of God.” –Leonard Sweet, author of The Three Hardest Words and Out of the Question…Into the Mystery“Leading with a Limp is not your basic, cafeteria-brand manual on how to ‘do’ leadership. It is a call to openly face your shortcomings as a leader. Dan Allender reminds us that our greatest asset as leaders is not our competence but the courage to name and deal with our frailties and imperfections.”–Dr. Crawford W. Loritts, Jr., author, speaker, and senior pastor of Fellowship Bible Church in Roswell, Georgia“Once again Dan Allender has propelled us headlong into the paradoxical wonders of the gospel of God’s grace. Leading with a Limp exposes the thin veneer of respectability we leaders try to stretch over our destructive idols of control and pragmatism. In so doing, Allender invites us to the freeing humility of leading as “the chief sinner” in whatever context God has placed us.”–Scotty Smith, founding pastor of Christ Community Church in Franklin, Tennessee, and coauthor of Restoring Broken Things“I often wonder if other people feel the way I do when they read books on leadership. Most of the books are heavy on motivation or strategy or positive thinking. Dan Allender looks at how anyone can move his team–and himself–forward when he is pummeled by circumstances and his heart is fainting. This is real-world stuff, but you’ll have to take off the rose-colored glasses to read it.” –Bob Lepine, cohost of FamilyLife Today“Leading with a Limp will have a lasting impact on me; it addressed several issues I’m struggling with at this point in my life and leadership. I thank God for this honest and insightful book!”–Brian McLaren, pastor, author of The Secret Message of Jesus and A New Kind of Christian

The mantle of leadership must not be viewed lightly. The roles and responsibilities of any stewardship position hold the potential to build up or break down. Whether it be in a corporation or a church, the weight of leadership can be a difficult burden to continuously carry. Society expects strong and definitive decisions while many who share in the work want nothing short of perfection. There is a reason so many leaders abandon their positions or burn out of their chosen profession. Weakness is present and eventually the point is reached where it can no longer be hidden from public view. Fearing negative repercussions and seeing nothing but failure, people will abandon their position and seek to start again somewhere new. This cycle of ever-changing leadership is all too common and can create a myriad of problems. Seeking to put a stop to the chaos is author Dan B. Allender. Within his book, Leading with a Limp, readers are encouraged to take advantage of their weakness for the good of those being led.The title of this work comes from the Biblical account of Jacob's wrestling with God found in Genesis 32:24-32. After spending a lifetime seeking to build a kingdom, this ancient patriarch recognized his inability to craft a perfect life. It took a night of wrestling with the Lord to turn the corner. He surrendered to God's control, but was left with a limp. This physical reminder of weakness would help Jacob remember that the blessings of life came not from his own hand but from the Lord. It is a lesson that all leaders must learn. No one has the capability to carry out responsibility with perfect wisdom, strength, or sustainability. Sinfully weak but sanctified believers must look to the Lord and His guidance. Honesty and authenticity are the place to begin. From this powerful admission, the author seeks to build a lifestyle of leadership that is directed and upheld by the hand of God.As president of Mars Hill Graduate School, Dan B. Allender practices leadership while at the same time preparing future leaders for service. His qualifications are apparent and his logic is sound as the book unfolds chapter by chapter. The only drawback to this particular work is found in its intended audience. Although seemingly written for Christian readership, the content seems to lose its consistency as it generalizes truths so as not to isolate a secular audience. Therefore some passages are quite focused on Christ-centered leadership while other portions of the book barely reference a scripture passage. This oscillation makes the book somewhat uneven. In addition, the author makes use of politically-correct gender pronouns rather than the classical term "he" which used to convey a neutral connotation. The constant switch of "he" to "she" from one paragraph to the next becomes rather confusing and often slows down the text as one is left to figure out if the term is meant in the general sense or in reference to a particular person. Aside from these few quibbles, the book's benefit is quite useful for leaders struggling under the weight of great responsibility.

If I had to sum up in one phrase all the leadership literature I have read over the few years, I would say, “Leading is difficult, very difficult.”Every moment of every day is affected by leadership. Whether it be at work, at school, or at home, our lives are affected by the decisions of our personal leadership or by the leaders above us.Leadership is certainly not for the weak. Or is it?This is the theme of Dan Allender’s Leading with a Limp. When we think of leaders, we tend to think of men and women who live in their own personal solar system. These leaders are different. They only work. They never stop. They don’t look, sound, or act like us. They seem to be of another species. However, this view of leadership is skewed and only found in our heads.Allender points us to the leaders God chose throughout the Bible. The most revealing fact is that almost every single leader we find in the Scriptures are chosen by God and only accepted reluctantly by the person. God delights finding men or women who do not seek out glory or position, but God’s glory and merely results.Leading with a Limp is a great reminder that society’s definition of leadership does not equal God’s definition.

My husband is the Senior Pastor of a large church of over 2000 members. He recommended this book to me, to better understand his struggles as a leader and be a better support system for him. His mission was accomplished after this great read. I am also a prophet by nature and appreciated Allendar's insight into this much-misunderstood onus on my life! Allendar's observations really helped me to see how my unsolicited advise on leadership to my husband the past 32 years has been hard for him to accept, even though it could have been very helpful. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a position of leadership, professional or voluntary.

I'm about halfway through this book, and I'm really enjoying it. The author talks about different challenges and struggles each leader faces. The pitfalls of leadership are outlined and talked about, as well as appropriate and inappropriate responses to each obstacle. The main idea of this book is that God is our strength in the midst of our weakness. Dan Allender makes the comment that our weaknesses are our biggest asset when leading others. For anyone looking for some guidance in the area of leadership, this is a very enlightening book.

Dan Allender has written a superb volume for any and all who would take the way less traveled into leadership and particularly leadership within a Christian context. This is a book which deals with the reality not only of leading others but of leading oneself and of dealing with all the complexities of being human in a place where it is commonplace for people to expect superhuman performance.Leading with a Limp will make you laugh and cry but most of all it will help readers to prepare their own hearts and souls for the challenge of leadership. Very readable. Well paced and incredibly honest. You won't want to put this down.

Dr. Allender has masterfully woven a picture of leadership that is raw and real. It’s depth and connection to Jesus is inviting. It’s careful review of the human condition is authentic, but motivating. While this book isn’t for everyone, it is for those of us leaders who desire to have Jesus finish the work he has started in us.

Most of the great leaders I know learn how to embrace their feelings of inadequacy, rather than escape them.Dan goes deep into the heart of truly effective and sustainable leadership. This book is worth the journey.

Increadably hard book to read. Not the language, it's an enjoyable read. The message: a strong leader is one who knows their weaknesses. The book itself is a cumulative representation of the message. The authors stories detail his own journey. Well worth the read.
