I have read and re-read "This Present Darkness" and "Piercing the Darkness" many times over since approximately 1990. The Pastor at the Church we were attending at the time, loaned them to me initially. I purchased a paperback copy at the time and read them again. Told my dad about them and then gave him a set since I knew he would read them more than once! When I saw them on Amazon' Kindle website, I purchased an electronic copy! These are AWESOME books and former Pastor, Frank Peretti, has written other Christian novels as well. I have read some but intend to read all.

Chilling. Gripping. This is true horror. 'Piercing the Darkness' exposes and illuminates the source of absolute evil. I pulled an all-nighter on this one.When school teachers in a small town begin teaching a new curriculum to their innocent, moldable students, the Fourth Grade class begins to manifest "spirit guides" -- and all Hell breaks loose. Literally.This is 'Good Vs. Evil' at its most fundamental. I'm not going to summarize this story because I'd reveal too many surprise plot twists that unfurl themselves like demon's wings as the novel progresses. Read it for yourself. If your soul isn't deeply perturbed by this book, then maybe you don't have one. Or maybe Someone Else is in control of it.Go on. I dare you to read it.

Bought this for my niece. I had read it shortly after college and thought she might enjoy it after having some discussions about the spiritual realm. Peretti wrote an enjoyable story that shows how all these forces play out in the lives of people through a mystery/thriller. Good thought-provoking book to have in your collection with the classic C.S. Lewis book The Scewtape Letters.

This Present Darkness was a very enjoyable book to read. Through the story, the author emphasized the importance and power of prayer which greatly effects the lives of people all around. The story portrays the unseen, heavenly actions of God and his angels, as well as the deceitful and conniving works of the Devil, who only works to destroy the saints of God. I personally would recommend this story to all ages of readers because it emphasizes the love of God towards his people, the power of God above Satan, and the need and importance of a praying Church of Christ. This Present Darkness reveals the truth that without prayer to God, anyone, Christian or non-Christian, can fall under the lies and deceptions of the Devil.

Powerful, compelling and captivating -- yet replete with spiritual observations and lessons. Yes, you can read a great book and learn spiritual truth as you read and I cannot recommend this book too highly. From teens to senior adults, this book will reinforce your faith while you struggle to put it down. The first time I read it was a Sunday afternoon, the day before my daughters left on church-related missions trips to Central and South America -- it inspired me to pray fervently for my daughters every day they were gone. Yes, they both returned home safely.

One of the best books I have read on Spiritual Warfare! Even though it is fictional, Peretti opens our eyes to the spiritual battle going on around us as Christians. The way he imagines the battle unfolding is very Biblical and thus makes reading passages like Ephesians 6 come alive. Though the book falls into the science fiction category I wouldn't say it is to strange or weird. I have read a lot of other Christian fiction books that are farther out there than this one. I would recommend this to every Christian! A Must Read

Wish I had read the Foreward before ordering this book. While I wanted a book from inspirational fiction, this author clearly delineates the type of Christianity he believes in: narrow, prescribed, militant. Anything that does not fit into his views are Satan's business. Sorry. I was looking for an author who was spiritual, not pedantic. Did not realize this in time to return the book. It will now go in the trash!

I have read this over and over again and will likely still read it again. Beyond entertaining, it awakens one to the reality of evil principalities over individuals, neighborhoods, organizations, cities and regions. It also shows the supremacy of the believer over evil, regardless of the wickedness of the unseen evil personalities or their position in the hierarchy of evil. It shows the weakness of evil, when we stand on God's word. It shows also that the devil and his cohorts are not nearly as powerful as they portray themselves to be. Jesus said, "All power in heaven and on earth has been given unto me." So the devil has none.I also love love love how the angels allow the demons to seem to be winning and then swing a surprise rout. Very like God to catch the crafty (the deceiver) in his own craftiness. The princes of this world go ahead and crucify Christ not knowing it's a trap. This book lets you see that God will have the final say, when we refuse to fear, we pray, we stand on His Word. God will contains evil no matter how pervasive it is, when believers step up to the plate. After all, it's His universe, He created the playing field.Satan fears a true believer who knows his or her rights in Christ. One true believer can change the spiritual climate of a city or a region. But the power increases exponentially when believers unite and we set aside all our theological or doctrinal differences and we just unite around Christ and Him crucified. That is when we become the body of Christ and the days of evil in our communities and cities and societies and economies are over.

Her main goal is to prevent A.I. singularities from happening and taking over. She is designed to live in this world and if A.I.s were to take over she would not fit in so well.Emergent picks up where Unbound left off. Synthia is on the run and barely escapes a trap laid by government agencies. She also has to avoid the other androids that are trying to absorb or kill her. She also must deal with a new A.I. that wants to use her to escape his confinement.If you're looking for an android vs android vs A.I. vs humans story this book is for you!

I have followed the Android Chronicles from the first book and watched Synthia Cross change and grow. The plot has kept her on the run for the entire series and with Emergent she faces her last battle. I wondered how this would end and if Synthia would even survive. She is very smart and using her brain and the programs she has completed for herself she arrives at a interesting solution. She is still around and she is still watching to make sure there are no other androids to cause trouble in the world. A nice ending when it looked like it was not possible.I received a free copy of the book in return for an honest review.

In the book Emergent, author Lance Erlick continues the story of Synthia, the most advanced artificial intelligence android ever built. And she is fighting to keep other AI’s, the FBI, special ops or several other foreign government groups from capturing her and making a super army by replicating her. And now someone keeps trying to draw her to join them. Who is this mysterious voice she keeps hearing?This was a good fast paced book that continues the series. I would recommend this book.I received a copy of this e-book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Emergent is the story of the perfect human/android weapon on the run. Honestly, I thought I would enjoy this book much more than I did. I got lost somewhere and I stayed confused for most of the story. The concept is a bit far fetched for me. Overall, it was not what I expected. Unfortunately, it's not my type of book. Thanks to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

I first learned about Bass Reeves through an article in True West Magazine. After reading this article it peeked my interest in finding out more about Mr. Reeves. Reading the reviews of this book I was a little skeptical at first on whether or not I should purchase it. To be honest if a historical book does not get my attention in the first chapter or two I usually don't finish reading it. This book grabbed my attention from the beginning. Art. Burton did a great job of taking you through the life of Bass Reeves from his humble beginnings to his death, using what few historical records he could find. Throughout the book are records of arrests, court testimony, census and tax records and newspaper articles detailing the life and arrests made by Bass Reeves and other Deputy US Marshalls. Being a retired Deputy Sheriff of over 30 years I found some of the testimony and suspect statements very interesting. The suspects in those days use some of the same excuses as the suspects currently use. I guess nothing has really changed.It's too bad there were not more records available detailing this outstanding US Marshall's life. Since some records are not available it does make the reading a little "choppy" at times. That is the only criticism I have about the book. And to Art's credit he did a lot of research to find what records he could, and he organized them as best he could in a chronological manner. What I'm saying is if you find the book a little "choppy" you can't blame the author. Also Mr. Burton did not take any liberties filling in the blanks. He kept to the facts and if there were any conjuncture he let you know.As I said early I spent over 30 years working as a Deputy Sheriff. After reading this book I can say I would have been proud to have been Deputy US Marshall Bass Reeves' partner.

Now, I consider myself fortunate for having crossed the path of each inspirational man.As a retired deputy sheriff, I might have a greater appreciation of the accomplishments of Deputy Marshal Bass Reeves than the average reader, but with the depth of research that author Art T. Burton has completed, he makes it perfectly clear—with well-documented resources—how and why Bass Reeves was a remarkable person and outstanding, courageous, law enforcement officer.For nearly my whole life I’ve heard African Americans speak of how they need to be twice as good as a Caucasian in order to be successful. Bass Reeves is a perfect example. He was the best of the best despite societal handicaps.Reeves, born into slavery, wasn’t permitted to learn to read, yet as a deputy marshal he was able to accurately serve writs, arrest outlaws, file paperwork, and testify in court.In his thirty-two years as a deputy US Marshall, Reeves estimated making over 3,000 arrests and killing fourteen men—all in self-defense.Despite working in the most dangerous US territory during the late 1890s and early 20th century, he had a solid reputation of dedication to his job. He did this during a period of time when overt racism was common but the circumstances allowed the courageous—of any color—to be successful.Ironically, as Reeves helped tame the Indian Territory (later Oklahoma) he was closer to the day the new state would welcome Jim Crow laws of racial separation. In the new era, African American lawmen were no longer arresting criminals of any color. I saw the biography of the real Lone Ranger on The Americam Hero channel and was fascinated. Bass Reeves is highlighted on their Gunslinger series. It is a must watch. Bass Reeves was left out of history books because of his race. He was a U.S. marshal in the Indian terrory for 30 years and arrested over 3000 criminals. This is longer than any other Marshal of that era. He was the inspiration for the Lone Ranger series. He rode a white horse, used disguises, gave away silver dollars and was friends with the Indians. He never failed to arrest his man. He was a legend during his lifetime but was forgotten to history.

This is a well-researched but kind of dry look at the life of African American lawman, Bass Reeves. Reeves was a legendary figure in the Indian Territory; a man who always got his man. Very little biographical information exists about the man's life but, as evidenced here, the newspapers are full of accounts of his adventures and Professor Burton uses those to put together this history.This is not biography in the truest sense; it is basically an accounting of many of Reeves' arrests with as much information about his life as can be gleaned from the public record (due to fires, poor record keeping and a lack of people caring about such things at the time, there's not much). Burton is to be commended for gathering this much information together in one place so that the exploits of this overlooked but deserving man, Bass Reeves, can be remembered.Reeves deserves to take his place in the western iconography alongside the Earps, Hickcock and others. This book begins that process and is an important addition to Western studies. It's dry reading and not for everyone but it's what scholarship needs concerning Bass Reeves.

This book could definitely be more engaging. I was attracted to the subject, but after reading about 1/2 of the text, I lost interest. The book is an extensive collection of a lot of documents, court and personal, assembled in chronological order. I would have rather seen more of a story substantiated by documents.
