I love the way this book is organized. Rather than describe a series of hiking opportunities in New Jersey, the authors carefully culled through hundreds of trails and picked out the most exciting hikes in the state. They even patched together multiple trails in within most parks so you would get the best bang out of the time invested. The descriptions are accurate and fun to read. I tried three of them so far and look forward to doing the other 47.

In the first weeks of owning the book, I have done 3 of the hikes so far, Governor's Mtn, Manor circular, and Carris Hill, although I was already familiar with the parking lots, trailheads through many years mtn biking and hiking in the area, I found the descriptions to be top notch and accurate. Using those descriptions and a simple NYNJTC topo map (with GPS coordinates!) navigation is a snap. GPS is practically unnecessary since most of the trails are well marked. Even though I have only done three of the trips in there, I am very familiar with most of the places mentioned there, the Palisades, Wawayanda, Jockey Hollow, etc. as I've hiked or biked there before I got this book. The book is an excellent day trip for the beginner to intermediate day tripper, fits nicely even in small camelback type devices. My only wish is they included the trail blaze color in the maps they provide, makes for faster quick reference when hiking.Jay

Well, this book looked like it would be a great dot-to-dot book with a more advanced level of detail than most but when I opened it up I was rather shocked at how small the dots and the numbers are. They are so small that the dots are about 1/4 the size of a .05mm pencil lead. And not only is the ink extremely light, the ink color changes with every 100 dots which I found very distracting. The designs in this book are of an abstract style which further adds to the confusion. The criss-crossing of the lines back and forth on top of each other are very confusing. I worked two of the puzzles and wasn't interested in doing any more because of my inability to see the dots/numbers. Not only did I have to have glasses, I had to have a magnifier as well to be able to see the numbers. I have included several photos demonstrating the size of the print and the two puzzles I completed to illustrate the confusing abstract design. All in all, this book wasn't really for me. Someone who is very near-sighted would probably enjoy this book more than I could.

I would have given it a full five stars, but on at least 3 (that I've gotten to--there may be more), there are a few image/dots that didn't print on the edge...like it was too big and lines/dots outside of the edge just weren't there. It's only about 6-7 dots on each of them, but it's enough to throw me off a bit and knock off a star.Aside from the printing snafu, I like it a lot. The pages are nice and thick, and the color of the dots changes every 100 dots, making it easier to keep your place. Some of the comments complain that the numbers are too small--they really are small, but the pages are large and the author does a great job of making all 1000+ dots viewable.Don't expect an up-close viewing to be overly pretty--the dots are organized so that you end up with a picture that looks like it's been sketched. Not bad, but (as the description says), much better a little further away. It is pretty fun to see what seem to be odd scribbles turn into a cool image.

i have purchased all 5 of this series and find them to be fun and fullfiling as a pastime to while away the lazy afternoons of retirement. hey if you can't see the dots, use a magnifying glass. i started with this book. did not get the full secret trick about these till i did the warhol picture. now if i remember about 6 or7 of the different series and numbers all converged in the chin area. thats when i saw that when done properly drawing a line between numbers will not obscure any numbers you will need for later. you could have seen the light go on over my head.now the other thing i discovered is a ruler when you dot to dot glasses or a building, but free hand for faces animals and most lines under two inches. it's not like we are being graded on this perusal. this is a fun thing to do. easy on the body and you can keep the television off and show your grandkids a hobby that does not need thumbs and a screen to stare at.

This dot to dot book is VERY challenging!!! I finally finished my first one but it took me forever. The numbers are very tricky....because u never know where the next number might turn out. I am nearsighted and can see really well up close even though I am over 60 years old. I finally had to use a magnifying glass and when your numbers get higher and higher, you can lose your place so easily when you look for the next number. Also it helps to use a mechanical penci with .09 lead and have ordered a Tombow pencil eraser to erase with! I had so many smudges with a regular pencil. This book is my new hobby now and I love it!

this kind of dot to dot makes you work harder but I enjoy the challenge. It is amazing how all of that drawing back and forth in such crazy ways can actually capture the intended picture and they seem to come alive.....I do have to use a flashlight because the numbers are way too small. It takes a little longer to work a page but I get tickled when I can see it coming together.

This dot-to-dot is a lot of fun and the designs are very detailed and intricate. The icons are great and we love to guess who it is the further the drawing gets. My only drawback is the numbers are extremely small and some of the colors are harder to see than others. Other than those two things, these series are highly recommended if you enjoy passing the time by connecting the dots. These puzzles are a little bit harder on the dot-to-dot spectrum if you like a challenge!!

It was easier to find the numbers than I thought it would be because each set of a hundred numbers has a different color (200s red, 300s green), that helped a lot. It is easy to just zone out and relax- it takes just enough concentration that my brain is occupied but not so much that I start to get anxious. The big sturdy pages are nice. The only reason that it is not 5 stars is that the pictures (even when you are being really careful with your lines) aren't exactly masterworks.

I'm always looking for coloring and other activity books for "adults" so was thrilled to find this! Each picture probably takes a leisurely hour to complete, and in many ways connecting the dots is much more relaxing than coloring because there are no choices to make! The results are pretty cool -- all of the designs are really great you will be pretty pleased with the results. Thinking of making a cheeky gallery wall using my favorite completed portraits from this book.

I also read many books about Physics, theoretical physics and cosmology.I read about Hinduism; The Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, and others. All of these is to understand the ultimate truth of Reality.Yet Sufism blew my mind away and reshaped what I have learnt to something more meaningful, and everything now felt so right, perfect, and doubtless.The Science of physics and the spiritual-the mystic are ONE. Literally.I see the nature and people in it differently. I have no fear nor doubt. Very calm. Very peaceful. Full of love. I bought this book after watching an interview of the author on Oprah since I had wanted to learn more about Sufism and Rumi for a long time. Although during the interview Llewellyn was very impressive, this book is not. I was reluctant to write an unfavorable review, so I went ahead and read the book the second time, did a lot of research on the internet and watched Llewellyn's almost an hour long video called "We Are All One: Full Interview with Llewellyn Vaugh-Lee" and his interview with Oprah on the internet before writing the review.According to the book's definition, "Sufi is a name given to a band of mystics who are lovers of God". The goal in Sufism or a Sufi is to become one with God by mediating and chanting (dhikr). Some of the concepts are similar to other spiritual teachings such as "Divinity of humans" (Holy Spirit or God living in every human like Unity teachings), "The real reason of unhappiness or feelings of unfulfillment is the result of separation from God" ("A Course in Miracles") ," Living in the world but not of it" (Bible) and "Living in the presence of God every moment" (Marianne Williamson's writings)After finishing it, I was terribly disappointed by the book which is terribly dry, abstract and repetitious. ( "The mind and the ego can never grasp an experience of total unity in which there is no distinction between observer and observed, but the heart's experience of His unity is reflected into our ordinary consciousness." )I learned more about Sufism from a three minute video of Jonathan Brown from Georgetown University, a video clip of a documentary about Sufism by PBS on the internet and Rumi's official website maintained by his descendants(Mevlana Rumi), than reading this book.(Mevlana Rumi's website also has a list of recommended books in English. If you click on each book's web link, it takes to Amazon.com, where you can buy the books.)However, my major disappointment about this book was the dedication of one third of the book, fifty pages, to Carl Jung and his dream work while briefly mentioning Rumi, two pages, the first person comes to mind in many circles talking about Sufism. (Since I did a lot of reading about Jung years ago, I did not buy this book to learn about Jung but Sufism) Not to mention, there was no coverage of Omar Khayyam or Al-Ghazali "whose influences extended beyond Muslim lands and Western philosophers and theologians" according to my internet research.In this age of separation, alienation and strife, we need more enlightened spiritual teachers like Llewelly and his message of universal love and unity. ("God is all there is, everything is God's expression of Himself and God is love."/ "Whatsoever you turn, there is the face of God") One can't help but admire his command of the English language when he talks, brilliance, level of spiritual enlightenment, and dedication of spreading the message of universal love (Sufism) to masses. I wish he would write the way he talks because if readers, who don't know much about the subject matter unlike him, don't understand the book, the message is not going to reach the target audience. (I highly recommend watching his an hour long video called "We Are All One" on the internet to really appreciate him.)

For years I had no true understanding of the term "heart" other than in the context of a blood pump and/or some elusive indescribable motion. Between "Sufism: The Transformation of the Heart" and "The Knowing Heart: A Sufi Path of Transformation" by Kabir Helminski, I now have a much more meaningful understanding of this profound word, "heart". I could not find such work within the frame work of Christianity, but these two books have satisfied my quest.

Lost interest

I got goose bumps repeatedly while reading this book. Love just pours from this book as you read it. You smile because you feel so good absorbing the words. I bought this book because I wanted to know more about Sufism. I'm so glad I did. This book stays on my night stand so I can refer to for inspiration on a regular basis. Thank you Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee for sharing such beautiful writing with all of us!

Nice book! I had to ignore the proper names (there are so many) and just focus on the great beliefs and values in this book. I did send it to a friend because I like it so much.

I saw this author on Oprah's Super Soul Sunday about a month ago. When Lewellen Vaughn-Lee shared that there are at least 99 words for God, but the Sufi's say "Beloved," my heart opened and I felt transformed. All the other words for God did not resonate with me...too remote or not meaningful, just words. "Beloved" was the key for me, I felt it in my heart and tears sprung to my eyes.The gentleness in this man made me want more.
