From School Library Journal

K-Gr 2-Wilfred wants a pet, so when a moose just happens to wander by, the boy claims him as his own and dedicates a lot of time to teaching Marcel the rules of being a good one. They fill their days exploring the countryside and taking long walks. One day, however, Wilfred discovers that his moose might have a whole other life that he knows nothing about. He must figure out how to process this shocking discovery and decide if he can accept the fact that he must alter the boundaries of their friendship. With its classic story of friendship and witty text, this beautiful picture book will appeal to children. The fonts are mixed between standard type and words that appear to be handwritten. Speech bubbles appear on some pages as well, to give voice to Wilfred and several other characters. The illustrations are a combination of oil paint onto old linotype, painted landscapes, and technical enhancements. The characters are whimsical and bright, and the appealing landscapes carry readers along on this journey of two unlikely friends. This Moose Belongs to Me will be adored by younger elementary students, particularly those who have longed to keep a wild animal as a pet.-Amy Shepherd, St. Anne's Episcopal School, Middleton, DEα(c) Copyright 2011. From Booklist

*Starred Review* Wilfred is a young man with seriousness of purpose (and a bow tie and suspenders), and he owns a moose. Finders keepers, after all. Wilfred explains to his moose, Marcel, all of the rules for being a good pet, but Marcel is impervious to such instructions. Indeed, the pair happens upon a little old lady only to discover that Marcel is actually Rodrigo, and not Willard’s moose at all. Willard departs, despondent, and gets himself into some trouble, involving a tangle of powder-blue string and the advent of monsters. But the moose shows up to save him, and the two arrive at a new arrangement. Or so it seems . . . Jeffers composes his trademark painterly cartoon figures atop a variety of backgrounds, including Victorian linotypes and some Serbian landscape paintings (scrupulously sourced). He mashes them together with a bit of intentional pixilation and lots of good cheer, and infuses the mix with remarkable drama, conveying a bevy of emotions with simple gestures and an astute sense of color. The result is a spirited, appealing romp that hums with motley vitality and good-natured humor, certain to induce cheers and groans and chuckles galore. Preschool-Grade 3. --Thom Barthelmess

This was a gift to our grandson and he loved the story. The only reason why I did not give it a 5 star is we were unable to read the title on the front cover. It appeared as if the letters had come off and all that was left was what appeared to be the glue they were stuck on. It just may be that that was how the book was printed but, it did not make sense to us. My grandson even remarked that there was no title.

I am on my way to owning EVERY Oliver Jeffers book! We absolutely LOVE his work!!! His stories are so witty, original and cute!!! My grandmother, who also shares a love of children's books w me has also fallen in love, and bought herself a copy! My 4 year old absolutely adores his books (but I might more!) Sometimes, when I teach (I am an elementary substitute teacher in the state of Washington) I bring his books to read as a "reward" at the end of the day. Just LOVE them. Really smart. GREAT illustrations!!!

A lovely story about a boy who thinks he owns a moose...the pictures are beautiful and I love how this book has a moral but it's not in your face.

Way cute story. Got it as a gift for my son’s teacher and he loved it too. I always love a silly story with a solid laugh at the end.

*This Moose Belongs to Me* is a delightful tale told from the egocentricity of a child. It develops the understanding that in life, what we think is ours, may in fact be shared by many. I purchased this as a birthday gift for a 3-year-old. Where she now is entertained and interested in the pictures and artistry of the page, at some point through multiple readings (which DOES happen!), she'll get the underlying message it presents. Good choice!

Great illustrations, fun story, interesting vocabulary. Oliver Jeffers never disappoints but this one is among his best. He has a way with words and the art is more unique and engaging than most children's books. My five-year-old is a huge fan and knows every word. And it's SO cute to hear him read it out loud.

Effortless transaction. Excellent product! Charming childrens' story. Very satisfied.

Totally cute, somewhat sardonic, clever illustrations, and most importantly, entertaining for a parent to read to her kid every night ad infinitum.

"Nothing Like It in the World: The Men Who Built the Transcontinental Railroad, 1863-1869," by Stephen E. Ambrose, is a highly readable account of the building of America's Transcontinental Railroad in the mid-nineteenth century. It's the story of the fulfillment of a decades-old dream to link America from Atlantic to Pacific Ocean. It's also a book that's created a firestorm of controversy in the years since its publication.According to Ambrose, the dream of a transcontinental railroad began in the 1830's. During this decade, the United States was in the midst of forty years of peace. There were many local railroads linking towns and cities throughout the United States, most notably in Illinois, Ohio, and California. Still, there was no railroad joining the heavily populated eastern United States with its west coast territories. This became the vision of many entrepreneurs and politicians, most prominently Abraham Lincoln, who said in 1832: "...no other improvement...can equal in utility the rail road."In 1849, the discovery of gold in California gave new urgency to the building of a transcontinental railroad. Most people who headed west in search of gold had to cross the great plains and desert southwest in covered wagons, sail around the southern tip of South America, or traverse the isthmus of Panama on foot.By the 1850's, surveyors had begun searching for possible routes for a transcontinental railroad. The American Civil War interrupted their efforts; when the Civil War ended, political support for the railroad continued to be strong, even after Lincoln's assassination. It seemed like everyone of importance wanted to see the transcontinental railroad built."Nothing Like It in the World" is less a story about the politics behind the building of the transcontinental railroad as it is a tale about how the railroad was actually built, although the book's early chapters are devoted to telling the story of the men who founded the Union Pacific and Central Pacific Railroads, and of their efforts to get support from the Federal government for their endeavors. The vast majority of this book tells the tale of the ordinary people - mostly immigrants, Mormons, ex-Confederate soldiers, and other laborers - who frequently sacrificed life and limb to build the railroad. These were the ones who surveyed routes, laid road beds, built bridges, excavated tunnels, set down ties and track, and drove spikes across the heartland of America. The Central Pacific Railroad began its journey eastward from Sacramento, California in 1865. At almost the same time, the Union Pacific began construction westward from Omaha, Nebraska. On May 10, 1869, the thirty year-old dream of a transcontinental railroad was finally realized at Promontory Summit, Utah. On that date, the final spike that joined the two tracks and connected the east and west coasts of the United States was driven. When I first read "Nothing Like It in the World," I thought it was an excellent book. Ambrose's descriptions of the construction process are superb; the best qualities of Ambrose's writing - his colorful descriptions of people and events and his easy to read narrative style - are always present.Unfortunately, these strengths are offset by the book's many flaws and controversies. Since its publication, "Nothing Like It in the World" has come under close scrutiny and fierce criticism for its allegedly slipshod research, factual errors, and "made-up quotes;" as a result, it has lost a great deal of credibility. Before his death, Ambrose apologized for his errors, and promised to correct them in future editions.I have decidedly mixed feelings about "Nothing Like It in the World." Although I thoroughly enjoyed it for its readability, its many flaws cause me to question its usefulness as a scholarly work of history. Readers should consider other, more detailed, better researched, and historically accurate books on this subject - most notably "Empire Express" by David Haward Bain - before turning to "Nothing Like It in the World."

If I recall correctly, when the book was first published, Ambrose came under some criticism for an alleged plagiarization of some of the passages in this book. For that reason, I refused to buy it for a long time. Although I already have several other books about the construction of the first transcontinental railroad, I did finally buy it just to see if Ambrose had anything new or additional to say about the RR. In fact he did. Some information that earlier authors had offered either incompletely or erroneously, Ambrose got right. If there was any plagiarizing, it is forgiven. It's a good read.

Five stars says I "loved" it, and that's largely true. Frankly, I'm a train-lover who's even visited the fabled Promontory site, and I did enjoy Ambrose's consistently engaging storytelling. This wasn't an easy project for any writer, but Ambrose skillfully tells the story of a railroad being built literally from both ends toward the middle, without the reader losing a sense of time and place. He describes more than building a railroad; he peels back the layers of social, corporate and political intrigue that shaped a project as big as the Trans-Continental Railroad. Which exposed some of our nation's often inspiring but also ugly history: the greed and manipulation, the no-holds-barred competition, the smoke-filled room deals and steals, and the ugly racism that used Chinese (and other) workers as near-disposable parts of a building machine and shamelessly pushed native peoples out of the way. That's part of our un-sanitized history as a nation, and it deserves to be exposed to the light of day.Still, it's a great read. I never got bored. And I still love trains.

This book reads much like a novel. There were wheeler-dealers and there were visionaries. Even Abraham Lincoln was involved! It made me realize just how big a deal a transcontinental railroad was, and the many ways it fast-forwarded the development of America. Also, I knew that my great-great grandfather, a Mormon convert from Sweden who moved his family to America to join Brigham Young in Utah, was killed in a landslide while working on “a railroad” in a place called Weber Canyon. Now I know that it was THAT railroad, and that Weber Canyon was a very important and difficult part of a very difficult endeavor.

This is a superb book by the consummate historian storyteller Stephen Ambrose. It is easy to forget now what a monumental task it was to build a railroad from the midwest to California during 1860's. It was almost like trying to put a man on the moon was a century later. The book is very easy to read, and will fill you with awe, particularly if you ever get a chance to ride the California Zephyr through the Sierra Nevada mountains, across the desert and over the hundreds of miles of mixed terrain that had to be crossed. The feat and the book are absolutely first rate.

Really well written, like all of Mr. Ambrose's books. I live in California and couldn't wait for the next time i went over The Pass on I-80 to see the sites of this remarkable history. When I went over the mountains the next time, I stopped in some of the locations mentioned in the book and was rewarded with great museums, memorials and historic markers of the events and milestones chronicled here. read this book if you want the whole story in one volume.

"Nothing Like It In the World", a book by Stephen E. Ambrose, is a history of railroads in the United States but it is much more. It paves the way for an huge understanding of how the United States grew after the Civil War. It is a "must have" for anyone interested in U.S. and railroad history.

Since most of the core/kernel elements of Windows haven't changed since NT in the late 80's, most of the "new" stuff is in the form of API's. Soulami assumes a basic working knowledge of C/C++ or C#, but doesn't start at such a high level that you get lost in either the debugger or the tracer. This book is REALLY up to date on windows, and will catch you up even if you are still working on an NT base.Chapters include: 1. How to develop software for Windows 2. Getting started (debugging for fun and profit section) 3. How debuggers work (pretty basic but very complete, covers both User and Kernel modes) 4. Postmortem Debugging (JIT vs. dump techniques. Goes much deeper than the day to day systems engineer will usually go) 5. Beyond the Basics (the real meat of the book-- awesome-- data vs. code breakpoints, scripts, etc.) 6. Code analysis tools (fair to C/++ and sharp, with many actual/not just pseudo/ code examples that are well thought out and RUN); 7. Expert Debugging Tricks (we finally get to the fun and profit piece-- many techniques that are effective but unusual, and probably wouldn't be attempted by the usual coder without this book's help on avoiding potholes); 8 and 9 are a whole collection of very cool "scenarios" covering all the NIGHTMARES created by threads and multiprocessors such as race conditions, deadlocks, stack/heap and access problems, etc. These two chapters are worth the price of the whole book; 10 gets into the console subsystem and concludes this section.Section two (about 120 pages) switches themes with three chapters about Xperf. In short, if you try to run traces as you develop your software using just ETW (event tracing for Windows), you'll soon get overwhelmed and give it up. This means you're losing one of the best "secret sauces" of the Windows 7 SDK (a way to integrate what's already been perfected, instead of reinventing every wheel, with proven code connected with an already debugged ETW web). The way to tap into that secret sauce IS Xperf. The two excellent appendices give user and kernel debug quick start examples that make this book as much as a reference and tutorial as a step by step learning guide.Beyond debugging, there is a LOT of information on how to develop superior software USING the debugger, not for debugging, but for software analysis, code vs. operating system, security, and development cycle issues like static vs. runtime analysis. Any good or prospective windows developer will benefit from this wealth of info. This is over 500 pages PACKED with wisdom and experience, well worth the price as a career enhancer or builder.

A Programmers toolset is important, and what's more important is knowning how to use the toolset. Windows Debugging, and debugging in general was not something that I every learned in school. The windows Debugger is powerful but some complain there is a learning curve to it. The author takes you through very practical real world problems, with accompanying examples to teach the reader how to not only use Windows debugging tools mainly windbg, but also to teach the reader how to debug.Overall excellent book, well worth adding to the library.

Great reference for windbg or great for people getting started in Reverse engineering. I would for sure suggest this for people new to this topic and veteran Reverse engineers for a reference.

Prompt delivery and great content. Recommend if you are involved with troubleshooting Windows operating systems.

This is a very good book.

very good tips. it is always good to have insider information from Microsoft.

Unfortunately, on x64 Windows versions many exercises doesn't behave as expected

There is nothing in this book that is surprising it covers the usual things, stack tracing, heap corruption etc.,.The obvious things are covered, but I hoped for more detail 'inside' debugging for windowsIt could also do with a better explanation for how a process is put together, the information is all there, but scattered around the place.

Great guide, honestly. I have the official Rockstar RDR2 hard cover guide, with the game app digital version and I still find myself coming back to this guide more often. It’s organized extremely well, detailed information and packed full of every detail. And for a game world like Red Dead Redemption, that’s not an easy task. I was concerned it would be a difficult series to jump into...and honestly, this guide was a game saver. I couldn’t play without it. It may not be all fancy like the hardcover official guide, but if you are looking for in-depth information extremely well-organized, this one did it. I can’t say enough about this guide, I love the game and this guide made the game that much more enjoyable! I’ve only purchased a few guides for games in my life for games like Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Horizon Zero Dawn, and now Red Dead Redemption 2, this is the first time I’ve purchased a non-official guide and so glad I did.

I thought this was the Piggyback version, but it's not. There are no maps or pictures and it isn't as detailed. If you want just basic instructions, this will do just fine. If you want maps and pics, pay the extra $10 and get the full Piggyback guide.

Not enough tips, no illustrations to go off of. Would not buy again, rather pay more for Prima Strategy Guide.

I thought this was a full version like the one they sell in stores but its not its a much smaller version of the full book lacking any maps so I was a bit disappointed. Official guide is much better than this watered down version.

Was really disappointed. The thing is fomatted like a text book. Really small print and no maps. Very few illustrations. On the lookout for a better guide.

The book has basically all of the info the game gives you laid out in tables. But there is quite a bit of incomplete information on additional items. Such as missing important collectible locations, extremely vague descriptions to locations that are provided, and missing quite a few extra features of game. Only good part about book is amount of info in one place. Not worth the money for me, wrongly advertised as what I thought would be written by Rockstar, nope. Some player plagiarized the whole game into a book and made money on it.

Have had to find a lot of things on my on. Does not show location on map to find things only a general name. Not the guide is you want specific info.

The guide is decent, but it isn't anything more than what you can find from a dozen different gaming websites. It's also riddled with typos. In all, not worth spending money on.
