I've been buying these books for years now ever since the 18th edition. I am an IT professional and I give these books an Scott Mueller every bit of credit for the knowledge I have in the field. I strongly recommend watching the DVD's that come with the books as they are very informative and give you a lot of practical knowledge from experience.

At first I was put off by the density of technical detail in Mueller's book, but as I began to read individual chapters, I grew to appreciate that this is an extremely useful, well written and interesting text on PC hardware. I bought this book as a companion to "Guide to Managing and Maintaining Your PC" by Andrews which was a textbook required for my A+ certification class. Both are 1000+ page books: Andrews' is an expensive carefully constructed textbook with glossy pages, lots of illustrations, exercises, projects. It covers both hardware and software. Mueller's book, is devoted strictly to hardware, and here's my comments:1. Historical Information: Mueller gives complete history of each of the components of a PC, such as the evolution of the processor or disk drives.2. Technical Reference: This book has dozens and dozens of comprehensive tables that deliniates the details of each successive release/update/upgrade/replacement for each component and sub-components of the PC, such as BIOS or diskdrive technology or whatever. Detailed and useful information is provided.3. Hardware: As mentioned above, this book is only for hardware, look elsewhere if you want to learn about operating systems, programs, etc...4. Troubleshooting: Not a whole lot about troubleshooting...though there are some useful items. Andrew's book has a couple of chapters of troubleshooting. It's hard to teach trouble-shooting. Mueller's approach, I would state, is that if you have a really good understanding of how the PC works, you're in a much better shape to understand how to fix it.5. Quality writing: this is one of the best written reference works I've ever encountered. So once I got over my reluctance to dig in, and actually started reading, I was very pleased at how well the information is presented. At first I just jumped into a few topics that were of interest. But once I got going, I realized that I would enjoy reading the whole story from the beginning, which I'm now doing. This is not an afternoon's project, but as technical reading goes, this is one of the best.

First, the physical book has a hard cover, quality paper, clear crisp font. I like the 'contents at a glance' along with a detailed contents section. The index seems complete and accurate. Each page has the section description, chapter # at the top, and page # bold/lager font. The book is loaded with useful tables and figures. Many of the tables have expansion of acronyms for quick reminder. Throughout the book are pointers to locations that expand on a specific topic.Second, the contents are in depth, up to date (as best can be done), and easy to understand.I have a vintage 2000 Dell desktop system. I planned to use the power supply unit and case for a new build. Thanks to this book, I discovered that the PSU is non-standard and not recommended for upgrade. If you are interested in upgrading or repairing your PC, get this book. You won't be disappointed.

This is an absolutely splendid book. I have used previous editions upon occasion, but since I was about to try my hand at building my own PC, I spent considerably more time reading sections in this new (20th) edition -- which, by the way, is very much up to date. Mueller's book contains an unbelievable wealth of information, much more than any one person is likely to require. But the volume is so well organized and indexed that it's easy to find what you're looking for.Although professionals will surely find this book indispensable, Mueller's explanations are so clear that they will usually be intelligible to lay readers who have a little background in technology. Moreover, the text is supplemented by an excellent and large collection of photos and drawings. For any first-time builder, Chapter 19 is especially valuable. Other chapters are very helpful for making component selections. Or, if you're just interested in seeing what's inside the box, this will tell you everything you want to know.

Mueller is usually my primary source for information, but immediately before I noticed I had not written a review for this reference, I discovered this 21st edition lacks much coverage of SCSI. Of course, an encyclopedic scope of reference is why I routinely buy Mueller, so I was somewhat surprised, consoled by the fact I have his earlier versions which do have ample coverage. And that difference probably explains why SCSI was substantially underrepresented in this edition-- the technology changes, and to write a volume which is fewer than 1,500 pages requires older (SCSI) technology be tossed overboard. Of course, I plan to keep all the editions, just in case.Rather than a perfect 5, I give a 4.576898.

This is truly an incredible book. Virtually everything related to PC hardware is covered in detail. This 21st edition is the latest update and I find I read at least every third edition from cover to cover, even though I am not a computer professional. The writing is quite good and actually pretty entertaining. There indeed is a lot of stuff from previous editions but that is the nature of a book about a rapidly evolving technology. The author works hard to keep the book at a "reasonable" length by taking less used information out and putting it on the companion disk. If you want to know how each hard drive type works or how each modern connector is configured, it's all in here. About the only complaint I could have is with the book's title "Upgrading and Repairing PCs" since the book is so much more than that. That title is now as outdated as was the "Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe Trilogy" when the fifth volume came out.

From School Library Journal

Gr 5–8—Twelve-year-old Jason D. Riazi is on the run from his New Jersey home after his mother, an undocumented Afghani immigrant, is apprehended by police. Hoping to find his Auntie Seema in New York City, he takes the train to Penn Station, but, fainting from hunger on the platform and suffering a concussion, he lands in the hospital where he fakes amnesia to keep his identity secret. Befriended by a young female patient, Max, who claims her superior brain is being studied, the two escape into the city streets only to be caught up in the throng of the New York Marathon. When Max collapses in an epileptic seizure, Jason must continue alone on his quest for safety. The familiar trope of two adolescents escaping from a hospital to pursue an adventure is enhanced by the timely theme of American identity amid the immigrant experience and is nicely textured with details of the New York cityscape. The narrative is peppered with riddles Jason has learned from his mother, and his questioning of his "Americanness" and Max's rebellion against her parents' overprotectiveness will resonate with readers. The story is fast-paced and engaging with sympathetic protagonists who raise thought-provoking contemporary issues. VERDICT An absorbing read and a good choice for discussion.—Marie Orlando, formerly at Suffolk Cooperative Library System, Bellport, NY

Great story fro Nadia Hashim. This is the fifth book of hers that I have read. It is different in that the whole story takes place in America yet it includes the Afghan background of the main characters mother. It is another winner in my opinion.

Nadia Hashimi is a wonderful writer. I have read all her books and found them all difficult to put down. I can't wait for the next one!

“If you don't take risks, you'll have a wasted soul.”----Drew BarrymoreNadia Hashimi, an internationally bestselling author, pens a heart wrenching and extremely intriguing tale about two kids' fearless adventures around the city of Big Apple to get to an address in her new book, The Sky at Our Feet. The story revolves around a young Afghan-American boy, goes on a quest to find his beloved aunt in New York City along with a friend whom he met at a hospital, when his mother is taken away by the police on the pretext of illegal immigration issue. But on their way the two kids face a lot of challenges and dangers, and how they overcome that has been brilliantly portrayed by the author.Synopsis:A young boy fears that his mother, an illegal immigrant from Afghanistan, has been deported, and he runs away to New York City to find help. A timely and poignant story about contemporary Muslims by the acclaimed author of One Half from the East.In the tradition of Rebecca Stead and Thanhha Lai, this adventurous and emotionally charged own voices novel by New York Times bestselling author Nadia Hashimi shows the fierce love of a family determined not to be torn apart.Jason has just learned that his Afghan mother has been living illegally in the United States since his father was killed in Afghanistan. Although Jason was born in the US, it’s hard to feel American now when he’s terrified that his mother will be discovered—and that they will be separated. When he sees his mother being escorted from her workplace by two officers, Jason feels completely alone. He boards a train with the hope of finding his aunt in New York City, but as soon as he arrives in Penn Station, the bustling city makes him wonder if he’s overestimated what he can do.After an accident lands him in the hospital, Jason finds an unlikely ally in a fellow patient. Max, a whip-smart girl who wants nothing more than to explore the world on her own terms, joins Jason in planning a daring escape out of the hospital and into the skyscraper jungle—even though they both know that no matter how big New York City is, they won’t be able to run forever. From the author of One Half from the East comes a timely and affecting story about one family in an impossible situation—pulled right from today’s headlines about immigration—who is willing to move mountains to stay together.Jason, whose Afghan single mother has overstayed her visa in America and is fearing deportation, goes on a dauntless yet gripping adventure with his new friend, named, Max, who is suffering from epilepsy. Together they journey to the Big Apple, trying to figure out the confusing street numbers, stumbling upon the dark side of the Central Park to falling prey to police officers looking for thew runaway kids, to the nurses, their adventure is only filled with drama, danger and complex challenges that they manage to overcome despite of the constant fear of getting caught. Their quest to find Jason's aunt is really vividly portrayed by the author and so is the honestly behind the general human behavior around an epileptic child. The author's writing style is coherent yet exquisite, rich with myriad emotions that will make the readers feel the pain, joy, happiness and the challenges of the protagonist till the very last page. The narrative is very simple and easy to comprehend with and the author has strikingly captured the voice and mindset of a young boy through honesty and in a quite thought provoking manner, that will force the readers to think about the protagonist's situation from their hearts. The pacing of the book is really swift as the journey itself will keep the readers anticipating with fear about the two kids' plight. This is a very satisfying read, that not only narrates the adventure of Jason and Max but also depicts the brutal truth about the cracks in the immigration system and the hardships around it in the life of an immigrant in the US. Also the author has sensitively captured the honesty behind a child's suffering from epilepsy and the people around her.The characters from this story are extremely well developed, laced with flaws and dynamism in their demeanor thereby making them look real and believable in the eyes of the readers. Jason is portrayed as someone dedicated to find his aunt who in turn who help him to find his mother, whereas Max is confident and funny, and would do anything for her friend, despite of her acute condition. Although this isn't much of a character-driven book, yet these two characters both enlighten the story with their unmatched charm. In a nutshell, this poignant yet extremely well developed story is a must read for one and all, irrespective of their age. Trust me, its so beautiful that its going to touch the very core of your souls.

If books should be mirrors, then Hashimi's The Sky at Our Feet is a floor-to-ceiling one.Informative but not preachy, this is a tale that covers a lot of ground (pardon the pun). Adventure, politics, health and science, and the sheer love of NYC all shine through. This is a book for both guys and gals: it's fast-paced enough to keep them turning the pages, has both a boy AND a girl as main characters, and teaches without being preachy. Highly recommended!"Do you know why we hang flags so far above our heads? Because we want to touch that sky, the sky that turns from blue to purple to pink and orange. You can find all colors in the sky. The sun, the moon, the stars, and the clouds-it has room for them all. That's why I love this country, my king. It is like the sky at our feet."

So much to love about this book. It's so timely in it's themes of what it takes to be an American, a friend, a rule breaker and belong to a loving family.

I have enjoyed all of this author's previous books and was eagerly anticipating this latest one. This was an easy read but disappointing compared to the others. I found the storyline lacking in substance. It was silly and unbelievable. It seemed as though it was written for a younger audience. I hope the next one is better!

Jason D, named after the last half of the year, is an American citizen. His mother is an Afghan refugee who is living in the US without papers and is under threat of deportation. When Jason D sees her being escorted into a police car, he assumes that she is on her way back to Afghanistan, and he decides to go from their home in New Jersey into Manhattan to find the only other adult he trusts, a friend of his mother's. He has a partial address for her and a few dollars, and with that, he sets out. Along the way he is injured and admitted to a hospital, where he meets Max, a girl who wants to escape her situation as much as he wants to leave his. Together, they navigate the streets of New York, evading the police and hospital staff. A powerful story that asks kids to think about what it means to be "illegal" and what it means to feel like you belong.
