NO directions or diagrams, not even as suggestions. No list of helpful parts for each story. Occasional pictures of completed work, but again, nothing to get you started making it. I get that creativity is important, that's why I love Legos. But some of us work much better having a template to bounce off of. "Build what speaks to you" just makes us anxious, and for an intergenerational event sounds to me like a recipe for a) disengaged adults and /or b) chaos. Two stars because the author obviously worked hard at this. A bit more detail would have made it so much better. Too bad, I was really looking forward to this book.
The author has some very helpful tips at the start of the book. She has layed out lessons very well but also incorporated enough flexiblity to make it works in many settings. I love the questions she poses in the lessons for the kids. I even did a lesson with adults and they enjoyed it!
I am using this as a framework for my Sunday School class. I have children from age 4 to 6th grade, and they understand the stories that I tell in a dramatic way. They then tell the stories with Legoes or PlayDo or crayons. They are attentive (all ages!) and are able to retell the stories at the end of the session as they display their work.
Our Sunday School is loving this book. The kids love using Legos to illustrate what they've learned from the lesson. They get to play with Legos while they listen and learn. WIN-WIN!!
Engaging for young and old!We used this in our Lenten Series this year. Both children and adults dived in enthusiastically. The process of both individual and group creativity and problem-solving was positive and (dare I say?) fun. The conversations around which pieces and characters to choose to fit the story image promoted listening and expressions of deep spiritual truths held by each participant. The possibilities are limitless!
A wonderful way to engage the scriptures with hands-on activities for the builders in your program.
This book was basically what I expected. I would have liked to see a little more explicit directions in tying together the legos and the Bible stories but did provide a good foundation.
The heart of this book is teaching the Bible. The "I wonder" questions take the story to a deeper level with the children. It does not come with patterns but the author clearly points out that the purpose is for kids to use their own imaginations. We have had an amazingly creative summer with this curriculum and it has inspired us to think about stories beyond those just in the book. We have gone from the Good Samaritan to Jonah and Moses. It had been so interesting to see which part of the story resonates most with the kids through their building. I was shocked at how many were moved by the fact that the Israelites were slaves and showed them building pyramids in their renderings rather than simply burning bushes for the story of Moses. You never know what will truly click with the kids until you let their creativity rule rather than imposing your own ideas or instructions.
