The author does a great job in capturing the three different personalities in the sisters. I really enjoyed learning about each sister and their parents. I really liked Zennie’s storyline though Ali’s story was a close second but Finola’s story made it hard for me to empathize with in the beginning. The interactions with their mother made me laugh and I really enjoyed how they dealt with her in their own way. The story flows smoothly and kept my attention until the very end.Meet the three sisters-Finola, Zennie and Ali. All three are different and unique but within twenty-four hours, their worlds change and explode. I loved meeting the sisters and how different they were together and apart. Finola is a TV talk show host with a great career and marriage. Zennie is independent and is an adrenaline junkie. Ali is the youngest sister and the overlooked one. She stirred my heart more than anyone as she kept putting herself down even as she had all these amazing qualities. She was the one sister I could relate to the most. This is an author who can deliver and create outstanding yet unique characters. I love how she puts three different personalities on the page, and you have no trouble keeping track of who was who. The secondary characters were just as enjoyable and entertaining.CALIFORNIA GIRLS is a fun filled story filled with amazing characters and a story that will resonate with you long after you finished reading it. If you haven’t read one of this author’s books before, this is a perfect introduction to her writing style. Once I started this book, I read straight thru the night. I thought that the three sisters, Finola and Zennie and Ali would act/react one way…and of course, I had NO idea where this story would take them! From the very first chapter, all about Finola and her unraveling life, California Girls grabs you and you just hang on. She is a morning talk show host in LA and her marriage, career, and life fall apart on live TV. Let me say that Ms. Mallery really wrote Finola’s guest (in chapter one) so I reallllllllllllllllly wanted to slap her upside the head. Nasty person, imho. Wow!For Zennie’s, her world is turned upside down when she agrees to help a friend (simply stated by me; well-written by the author). She starts to question her place in her family, with her friends, and her own judgment. Really deep.And Ali…beautiful Ali! Of all three sisters, she considers herself the least of her three sisters – less of brains, less of personality, and less of looks. For me, she had the purest of souls. And she has her own “trauma†to deal with and it will both break your heart and warm your soul to read about it.I have to say, the sisters’ stories turned out very differently than I had imagined. Good thing I’m not an author because I couldn’t even begin to some up with the twists and turns. The raison d’etre for these three women, and the men in their lives, will keep your interest and attention long after you finish reading. And their mom…good heart but whoa. She would make me crazy! Her character fits in the story but I’m still shakin’ my head.Great read, kept me reading well into the early morning hours, and I think it will stay with me for a long time.
Full disclosure: I follow Susan Mallery on Facebook, and preorder all of her books. I have to say, though, that California Girls is one of my favorite Susan Mallery books to date. Even though I had read the synopsis months ago, I was actually pleasantly surprised at this book. I highly recommend it!This book has it all. There is family drama between a set of three sisters and their parents. There is female relationship drama. There are several romance storylines, and one that is distinctly a different "Happily Ever After". Most of the storyline I saw coming, but I thoroughly enjoyed the presentation. Susan Mallery does a wonderful job of seamlessly switching between different points of view. The characters are very individual, and it's easy to tell who's telling each part of the story. There were a few extras that I didn't expect; for instance, there was a side story about the mother I didn't see coming. From the beginning to the end, it was a fantastic read. The best part is that this is a stand alone novel, so you don't have to try to remember reading any books that came before, and it doesn't set up any cliffhangers for later. The book makes a perfect vacation read. However, I don't recommend picking it up right before bed, because you may get so wrapped up in the book that you forget to sleep!
I’ve never been disappointed with a Susan Mallery book! This one was so good! Lots of family drama, that wasn’t in the realm of impossible. These are three sisters whose love lives all seem to come apart at once. With a disappointed mother who feels like she will never become a grandmother, to a father who doesn’t seem to care, these sisters seem to be able to move on from the break ups. I especially loved this book because I’m a California girl too!
