This is a well written and impeccably well researched book about the newest Catholic Pope, Francis. It is the story of a young man taught and formed by the Jesuit order, then shunned when he followed his spiritual call to cultivate his life after Jesus Christ, and prayer. It gives real hope to many millions of Catholics, who have been praying for reformation for years. With central beliefs of love and mercy, and LISTENING to God's holy people, the poor, destitute, and broken hearted, there is real hope for a Universal Church.
The Book is good the use of many, many, Spanish Words and the length 465 pages made it a difficult read if I had noticed when I purchased it that it was 465 pages I would not have purchased it. But I did learn about Pope Francis
The author covered the political turmoil in Argentina, both in the government (Peron era) and in the Catholic church, especially in the Jesuit community. This background to who Pope Francis was as a young and middle aged man helped clarify why he became pope and why he is so focused on the poor and disadvantaged in the world. I especially appreciated the excerpts from his writing and speeches over the years. He appears to be a true reformer in Church leadership and focus. At times, because of my limited background in Argentine history, I bogged down somewhere around the middle of the book but that cleared up rather quickly. I'm glad I finished the book and have thought about it many times since.
The author has set himself a difficult task: to make into a coherent and readable narrative biography, theology, and political context. Ivereigh does it well. The book made me realize that our current pope has faced many sorrows in his life and that his great call to mercy is based on his personal knowledge of humankind and great faith. I have purchased two copies of this book to circulate among friends.
An outstanding book...across the sweeping background of modern Argentina the reader gradually senses the development of a man who knows his place, not only in the history of his native land but in the developing history of the world and the Catholic Church. Rather than a 'great reformer' one senses in the pages that he is a contemporary prophet, driven by the Spirit.
I don't normally read non fiction, but I enjoyed this very much. It gave me insight into the Argentinian political situation with the Peronists and others. I was also interested in the role of the Catholic Church during these struggles. it makes one wonder just how much Pope Pius XII is rightly vilified for his supposed lack of opposition to the Nazi regime during WWII
Having previously read 4 other biographies of Pope Francis I at first hesitated to get this one. But I am very thankful that I did. It for me was a page turner. It resolved several of the questions that were ambling around in my head. What exactly was and is Pope Francis view of "liberation theology"? How is it possible that he can turn out so many beautiful homilies, writings, interviews, trips, etc.? Is he really as happy as he projects? Beautifully structured, nice prose, deep in information.
Few people, including Catholics, truly understand where our Pope Francis comes from. Hence they find it difficult to understand what he is saying and what he is doing. This brief biography will go a long way to understanding and appreciation of the whole man in the context of the Church, the world, and where we all are in this time.
