Pros:1)Gives you a no non-sense critical information and skills you need to know to pass the test.2)Passed the icnd1 using this as main study material3)If you have networking experience/knowledge, and you dont want to read a big 2000 page book, this is perfect for youCons:1)The information presented can be dense for beginners. I recommend watching a video on the chapter's topic before reading to understand better.2)The labs should focus alot more on verifying, troubleshooting(show commands) rather than configuring.3) If you are going to make the information dense, why not make the language easy to understand. Explain it like to a noob which is what this book is aimed at. Like, this book doesnt go into depth(thats fine, its why i bought the book), but it sometimes gives you a textbook definition of something instead of explaining it simply.
First and as pointed out by the author, this book does not cover elementary networking topics or what the book refers to as "network foundations for beginners." The author recommend reading a good Network+ book first. I agree. I also want to stress the importance of acquiring a solid understanding of the "basics" of networking. An analogy: Consider this foundation knowledge addition and subtraction. Success in algebra would be very difficult if the student had no understanding of simple addition and subtraction. Summary: Learn the concepts of basic networking! They are the foundation upon which you will build your understanding of other, more advanced, voice, video, and data networking technologies.I also want to use this review to stress the importance of subnetting skills. Before sitting for this exam, you should be able to look at a given IP address and prefix and quickly determine: the subnet number, the subnet broadcast address, and the range of usable IP addresses in that specific subnet. The ability to do this very quickly will help you enormously during the exam - and during subsequent certification exams.It's evident that Paul Browning's publications, video courses and practice exams have helped many individuals obtain the Cisco CCNA certification. No need to take my word for it. Go look at his website and you'll see the proof!My thanks to Paul Browning for his willingness to make excellent products available at a reasonable price. Cisco CCNA in 60 Days is an excellent training resource worth far more than its price. Huge bang for the buck here!
If you expect to get support from the man himself, as stated somewhere in the description for this book, look elsewhere. But for those who have some intermediate experience with Cisco gear, this is an OK book to study from. Paul does a great job of breaking down the content into digestible parts but that's where it ends. The text is too flawed for a beginner to follow. For one, you will be banging your head just a few minutes into the text because some of the commands just don't work....well he just too often omits a crucial command for the command that follows to work. For example on page 67 he is asking you to enter:Router#show historyand then he asks you to do the following:Router(config)#hostname My_RouterWhat did he forget? Well he forgot to type "Configure Terminal" prior to the command "hostname My_Router" for it to work as intended.NOTE: If you just started to work with Packet Tracer, good luck trying to figure out why some of the interfaces are missing in the text's reference router. With packet tracer you need to literally 'install' the needed hardware modules for the serial interfaces to show up in the OS (e.g., WIC-1T or WIC-2T). But Paul mentions nothing about this when he first introduces the topic and expects you to use Packet Tracer to complete the task!!If you are a BEGINNER you will be banging your head a million times trying to figure out why the command didn't work. Read other certified books and come finish your run on this book....Don't drink Paul's introductory self pity 'Kool Aid' with the promise to get FREE material from his website! The bad reviews are there for a reason. He is buying great reviews by bribing his readers in his text. If you dare to try to reach out, Paul himself is a pure pain to work with, even if you take his live courses. If you, God forbid, can't understand something from his lectures, good luck getting the answer from the master lecturer he is. He will just bark at you because he is such a perfect lecturer! How dare you criticize his lectures?! His arrogance is so pathetic that you just need to read the introduction to the book to get the gist. This book is not terrible. It can at the very least help you organize your studying into digestible chunks but you still want to consult other books for the topics that he covers, just to cover your rear. Most people that passed the test consulted other studying materials. Don't dare to take the exam by just studying his materials.
This newest version is all you need. It contains all of the updated information in a very accurate and concise manner. After reviewing each chapter briefly, and taking it for each day’s main point, I found it is spot on and will lead to success on the day of the examination. As a baseline, I have also compared it to the Cisco Press line of books and this is far easier to follow.I will now use this particular textbook as the main guide, while using the Cisco Press as a supplement. Combined, these items surely will lead to an opportunity to use on-hands labs with physical gear or with a simulator/emulator setup such as GNS3 or Packet Tracer. Personally, the physical gear is the best to learn your mistakes from.
This book does what any other training couldnt. It gives you a day by day checklist of what needs to be done. As long as youre willing to put in the 2-3 hours per day, you will be able to configure and maintain networks before you know it. Seriously, having a day by day checklist makes studying totally stress free. Do what the book says, dont be lazy, and you will get your cert.
