It is not a simple easy read but with a title like A Failure of Nerve: leadership in the age of the quick fix, you shouldn’t expect it to be. A major take away is that leaders who always try to build consensus are not leading as well as they could be because the anxiety in our culture pulls people towards safety and security and leaders often need to get people to move out of safety into something risky but better in the long run. Lots more great stuff here but be prepared to stop and think often and have to process what you just read.

This is a book I'd highly recommended. The primary concept is that we have become a society that abdicates out power to the least emotionally healthy voices. This book was written over ten years ago, but in many ways speaks prophetically to our current culture and politics. The author promotes taking responsibility for ourselves and guides a person how to provide a non-anxious leadership presence. This is a must read if you are looking to grow your leadership in the midst of a polarized culture.
While parts of this book were written many years ago, its relevancy today is a tribute to some underlying truths that the author presents. The "walls" that families, corporations, and societies face are overcome by great leaders who don't "follow the rules." This book has helped me sharpen my leadership presentations.
An authentic gem in the literature of leadership and growth. From my point of view as a psychotherapist and pastor in a diverse urban environment, Edwin Friedman provides a multitude of "ah-ha" moments for the leader who is searching for more substantive ways of thinking when it comes to living and leading well. Bravo!
Highly insightful book applying family systems theory to political life on the national level. And this was written in 1996, long before our current situation.
A great book about leadership! If only more of our elected officials and company CEOs read this book and applied its wisdom and advice!
There are a handful of books that I put in the category of paradigm busting. This is one. I can't believe it took me this long to find it and read it. I am immeasurably enriched and better off for having done so.
